Strategic autonomy and competitiveness of EU food systems: combining plant based and circular livestock systems to strengthen the EU

Key Points:
• Much of the vulnerability of the EU food system stems from its dependency upon critical inputs, themselves related to –though not fully determined by– unbalanced diets.
• Developing plant-based foods and circular livestock systems offer opportunities to move away from that situation.
• This however requires clear(er) policy orientations to support their development in terms of trade, industry, innovation.
